wellladiesandgents
i can say with all earnestness that i survived my first two days of the semester
with nothing more than a sore throat, a list of reading assignments already a mile long,
and a mild case of homesickness.

as far as schooling goes, the next five months will consist of:
the history of nature, miracle, and magic of the late middle ages
a pro-seminar on the history of u.s. religion in the 20th century
beginning sculpture, that which i am completely intimidated by
a publicity and promotions internship with an on-campus art gallery

and my very very favorite, a class entitled:
"the hand printed book in its historical context"
(insert your "ooohs" and "aaahhhs" here).

today was the first day and i am so enamored by it all.

we hand-sewed together mini pamphlets,
looked at various types of paper used throughout history,
toured the antique printing presses (that we will actually use!),
and distributed little iron letters to their proper little homes.

i learned where the phrase "mind your p's and q's" comes from,
and also where we get the term "upper case" and "lower case".

this may not be exciting to most people,
but for this girl, this is absolutely the greatest class on the planet.

well, i made my way up the california coast this morning
after many many tears, laughs, cups of tea, and hours of true blood.

i am back in my little yellow room with the twin bed and a bookshelf that is too small.
and i am feeling, well, rather melancholy. naturally. as i do every time i leave my heart in its tiny town.

i unpacked, went shopping, and called my mom. not in that order.
and i feel like my heart is literally detached from the rest of my body.

i just want to be there. is that so much to ask?

i have to survive this year, this semester, this month, this minute.

i am going back to school in two days.

i am sad to leave this small farm town where my heart resides
but i am looking forward to a quick five months filled with:

classes in sculpture, history, writing, book making, internships,
study dates, coffee (from my new french press!),  friends, birthdays,
flights home to see mom, music festivals, long nights, early mornings,
pancake sundays, yoga, and weekend getaways back to my love.
